Hi, i bought an external HP lightscribe dvdrw about 7 months ago, but when i went to burn a dvd the drive wouldn't recognise it. I tried putting a couple of different dvds in but they wasn't picked up either. I messed about and worked out that it will read and write cdr and it will still burn lightscribe. Is there anything i can do to get it to work? Thanks Tom
Unfortunately there is no easy repair for this problem. The drive uses different minute readers one for cds and one for dvds, although if you take the drive apart you will only see to laser eye's one is to read and write the discs the other is for burning your lightscribe. In the laser that reads and writes discs there are two tiny eyelets one for cds and one for dvds. It looks as though your dvd one is currupt and so therefor you are unable to do anything with dvds. The best and cheapest option is to just replace your dvdrw drive. You can either go and buy an external drive or as i have done, take your external case apart and replace the drive. (this is the cheapest option). They are fairly easy to take apart, you will generally find two small screws under a couple of the feet of the case, undo these first and then slide a thin screwdriver or knife in between the side of the case, this will release the case. You will find about 4 screws holding the rw in place just take these out and slide the drive out. Most importantly if you are just going to replace the drive inside the case make sure you know whether the fitting is SATA or IDE. Hope this is of some help.
